Kauai Unit

The Women’s Air Raid Defense operations on the Island of Kaua’i began on September 14, 1942.  The primary objective was to protect the Hawaiian Islands by tracking and plotting ships and aircraft within a 60-mile range around Kaua’i.  They worked in shifts, around the clock, at the Kauai Information Center known as “Hale Nani” on the Rice Property located on Rice Street in Lihue.  At the end of 1943, the outer island information centers became unnecessary.  Consequently, the Kaua’i WARD  was disbanded by order of the Army on January 15, 1944.
